  Chapter 1 – Addalyne Joins the Yutaka III Starship

  A voice floated from the overhead transducers of the Yutaka III. The Time Travel Computer was addressing a new crewmember during her indoctrination ceremony. The computer said, “Welcome, Addalyne Yutaka, I now enter your name into the Captain’s Log followed by the title, Electrical Engineer - First Class. You are now a registered member of this vessel’s crew and shall abide by all the rules set forth in the Yutaka III - Crew Doctrine, which now appears on the monitor in front of you. If you agree with the terms set forth in this doctrine, please state your full name and then sign the document with the stylus floating in front of the screen.”

  When Addalyne completed speaking her name and signing the document, she allowed the stylus to float away from her fingers, and then turned around to face the crew. As she took a deep breath to calm her emotions, the entire crew rushed to welcome her.

  The centuries following the year 21,266 AD, the time when Rebecca turned The Empress over to Ronnie Yutaka, seemed lost in the history of the Yutaka family. Rebecca had no idea that a new starship (the Yutaka III) went into service after its commission in 21,286 AD, or of any later events concerning the Yutaka family. It was as if the Yutaka family had simply teleported out of existence. From the many boxes of documentation Rebecca’s parents had left her, she had written six volumes of a novel she titled, The Intergalactic Peddler. The series documented the adventures of the crew of The Empress, the Yutaka II and the Coalsack Starships.

  Angela Rebecca Yutaka (a.k.a. – Rebecca Yutaka) turned The Empress over to her son, Ronnie Yutaka in the year, 20,945 AD on his twenty-first birthday. Rebecca, as we knew her from volume six of The Intergalactic Peddler Series, died in the year, 21,396 AD and her husband William Smith died in the year 21,398 AD.

  Commissioning of the Starship Yutaka III took place in the year 21,288 AD, approximately 110 years before Rebecca’s death. During that time, Rebecca and her husband, William, gave life to a second female child. She was born on December 25, in the year, 21,264 AD: Her parents named her, Addalyne Yutaka. When Addalyne turned twenty-four years old, she joined the crew of the Yutaka fleet and boarded the Starship Coalsack. She later transferred to the newly commissioned vessel, the Yutaka III.

  Jill Yutaka and Trish Wilson, owners of the entire Yutaka fleet, wanted to join their crew aboard the Yutaka III for the evening meal. They wanted to make their newest crewmember feel at home and they planned to have a crew meeting after the conclusion of the meal. Addalyne had spent two weeks aboard the Coalsack before her transfer to the Yutaka III and she was a virgin to the crew meetings. Trish seldom allowed a crew meeting to follow protocol; she usually stirred the crews’ emotions until someone snapped and vented their frustrations with other crewmembers or began a tirade over an unruly customer. Jill knew that Trish had discovered a comment in the Captains Log about a verbal altercation between two members of the crew. She also knew from the computer that a visiting engineer had overheard the argument. Trish intended to confront the two crewmembers during the meeting. If the crewmembers had not fully settled the matter, Trish would stir them to the point where one of them would break. Jill hoped that Addalyne would not witness two crewmembers settling their anger in the fighting ring; but she doubted that Trish would allow anything else.

  Once the food was prepared and set out on a large table in the cargo bay, the crew gathered around. Jill stepped out of the ready room and joined her crew. When she stepped up to the table, she told her crew to take their seats. Trish took some of the chicken from a large platter and passed the dish to her left. Once all of the food dishes had passed around the table, they began to eat. The conversation around the table was light and friendly, allowing everyone to speak as friends and family. Tabatha, the skipper of the Yutaka III held her crew to high standards and she seldom allowed idle talk during working hours. During mealtime however, she expected her crew to forget about work and concentrate on relaxing and bonding with each other.

  The business meeting followed the evening meal, which Trish and Jill hosted. The crew knew that Jill and Trish planned to assign the Yutaka III to a new customer service program within the fleet; however, the crew had no advance knowledge of their new mission. Trish and Jill also planned to introduce Addalyne Yutaka as the Electrical Engineer for the Yutaka III.

  As the evening meal came to a close, Trish stood up and addressed her crew. She said, “Many of you may already know Addalyne Yutaka. I originally assigned her to the Coalsack for a few weeks until the IFTT completed the activation of the Yutaka III. She comes to this fleet from IFTT Headquarters. As you may have already gathered, Addalyne is a True Blood Demords. She was born on the planet Rowkin, which some of you may remember is located within the Andromeda Galaxy, in Universe Number Two.”

  Trish reached down and picked up her water glass. However, she never took a drink from it; instead, she simply sat it back down on the table and continued with her story. She said, “The engineers on the planet Rowkin have built some incredible starships over the years. The IFTT recently commissioned one of those vessels, which goes by the name of Galileo. Addalyne has worked on some of the engineering and equipment development for the Galileo while working at the IFTT.”

  “The mission assigned to the Starship Galileo by the designers is to seek out new life forms and do scientific research within Universe Number Two. The Galileo’s mission statement provides instructions for the vessel to travel millions of years into the past to document the changes that have taken place in the universe, and then time travel many millions of years into the future in an attempt to predict what events in the cosmos will influence the universe.”

  “Six humans and a crew of intelligent computers staff the Starship Galileo. It is custom on the planet Rowkin to pair a child to an assistant within a few weeks of their birth. The Demords implant each True Blood child with a memory module that resided between the left and right hemispheres of their brains. The modules grow in place and soon connect to the somatosensory cortex of the brain, providing the Demords mind with a wireless interface connection to an intelligent computer system known as an Elder or Puissant. These Elders work with each child to provide it with an advanced education and a ready source of knowledge and information storage.”

  “When a Demords boards a time travel vessel, their mainframe Puissant is loaded into the mainframe Time Travel Computer. By relocating the Puissant onboard the time travel vessel, communications speed remains instantaneous.”

  “I will pass along some more information about Addalyne,” Trish said. “I would like each of you to understand that she is not telepathic, nor is she an empath. Here is what you all must understand. The Demords engineers disconnected Addalyne’s memory module from her birth Elder; however, her memory module now provides Addalyne with a direct link to any travel computer th
at will allow the connection. Trish and I have placed some new rules into our travel computer to prevent Addalyne from accessing any of your personal files or communications. The only exception to the rule is if the Time Travel Computer deems the intrusion necessary for the security or preservation of this vessel or its crew. I will say it again. Addalyne can only communicate with the computer and cannot read your minds or communicate with the telepaths on this or any other vessel.”

  “With those words spoken, please welcome Addalyne Yutaka as your new electrical engineer. She comes with incredible credentials and Trish and I hired her because of her ability to work quickly with the Time Travel Computer to decipher and correct problems as they occur on this vessel. She comes highly recommended by the Demords engineers and they consider her transfer to this vessel a loss for their engineering team.”

  “I suspect you will all enjoy the many stories of Addalyne’s work and life at IFTT Headquarters. The Demords live a simple life and have many of the same beliefs as we humans. I think her presence here will complement our ability to improve our service to our customers. Addalyne Yutaka, Trish and I would like to offer you a warm welcome to our fleet. At my insistence, the Demords have placed few restrictions on Addalyne and she is free to tell you most everything she knows about the Galileo Starship or her work at IFTT Headquarters. The Demords are not our competitors, nor do they have secrets to hide from us. Addalyne is very capable of sorting out any secrets that do exist and might be harmful to the Demords, the IFTT or the Yutaka fleet.”

  “Welcome, Addalyne Yutaka.”

  When Trish sat down, Jill stood up and tapped her water glass with her spoon. When the crew looked up, she giggled and said, “I always love doing that.”

  Jill looked around the table and made eye contact with each of her crew. As she looked around, she began to speak. She said, “By now, you all must be wondering why Trish and I had the IFTT create the Starship Yutaka III. Believe me when I say that we do in fact have a mission statement that we signed at IFTT Headquarters in regards to this vessel. I will now explain that mission to all of you. However, before I get to that, I want to explain the hierarchy of the crew assignments for this vessel. First, I have assigned the duties of skipper for the Yutaka III to be Tabatha Wilson. You all know her to be fair and honest with everyone around her. However, I must warn you in advance. If you mess up, you had best be first in line to explain yourself or she will take you down with little pity on your sorry ass.”

  “Second in command on this vessel is your new security officer, Shelley Cunningham. As you all know by now, she is a telepath. Lie to her and she will quickly discover your dishonesty. Please feel free to discuss any security related issues with Shelley as they come to your attention. This is a new vessel and sometimes issues do come up. If you need Shelley in an emergency, simply speak her name out loud until she locates you. Trust me, Shelley will find you quickly if you are ever in need of her help.”

  “You will all get to meet the medical doctor aboard soon enough, since he will be calling each of you in for preflight physicals. Please welcome, Doctor Joshua Crocket to the crew of the Yutaka III.”

  “William Crocket will be serving as our mechanical engineer, structural engineer and mathematician. All but Addalyne have known William for many years. Thank you William for agreeing to join this crew.”

  “I would like you all too welcome George Bishop and Daryl Crocket to our crew. They will be working the inventory control locker and the perishable food and drug storage areas to insure our customers receive what they order within the time line established. Tabatha will be relying on both of them heavily to insure our customer satisfaction, so try not to overload them with meaningless tasks that you can do yourselves. They are not at your disposal unless you have a real emergency, in which case, Tabatha or Shelley will guide them, not this crew.”

  “I have intentionally left the newest member of this crew until last. I want to personally welcome her and offer any assistance I can to insure she feels at home with all of us. However, the computer has just explained that Addalyne needs a guiding hand to her quarters for a few minutes. I understand desperation has set in. Since Addalyne has not had a tour of this vessel and Shelley has not updated the security chip in her wrist; Joshua, would you guide Addalyne to her quarters and then escort her back to this meeting when her task is complete? Thank you.”

  As Joshua and Addalyne exited the cargo bay, Joshua talked to Addalyne. He asked if she was okay. She looked at him and said, “Yes, Doctor. However, I need a bathroom rather quickly.” When they reached the room the computer had assigned to Addalyne, Joshua spoke to the computer and said, “Computer, please allow Addalyne to enter her quarters, now. You can set up her passwords at a later time.” When the door slid open, Joshua said, “The door straight ahead of you. I will wait here for you.”

  When Addalyne stepped back out into the hallway, she looked at the doctor and said, “Quite a way to make a good impression on Jill and Trish. Skipping out during a meeting is probably not the best thing I have ever done, but I was desperate.” Joshua took hold of her hand and said, “We all have our bad days. You will survive just fine. Take a deep breath and calm yourself. Jill’s telepathic mind will notice any anxiety or fear she discovers in you. Walk with your head held high and with confidence as we return to the meeting.”

  When Joshua and Addalyne sat back down at the table in the cargo bay, Addalyne spoke to the computer and asked it to thank Jill for assisting her with her sudden need. The computer followed through almost instantly and the crew saw Jill pause for a moment while she listened to the computer. Then Jill looked at Addalyne, smiled, and said aloud, “You are welcome, Addalyne.”

  It was now time for Trish to explain the mission statement for the Yutaka III to her crew. When she stood up, she did not have to tap her spoon on her water glass, the crew instantly quieted and looked up at her. She smiled and said, “It appears you have all been patiently waiting for me to talk or my reputation precedes me; I can tell by how quickly you all looked up when I stood. Or is it that you fear I will take offence to being ignored?” The crew heard Jill giggle over Trish’s words, but when Trish looked over at her, Jill quickly used her fingers to indicate she had zipped her mouth shut. The crew all tried hard not to laugh aloud, but some failed miserably. Trish just smiled and continued as if all was well. Trish giggled and said, “I was just teasing.”

  Trish walked over to her business partner and put her hands on Jill’s shoulders. Jill was uncertain of Trish’s actions, but sat quietly, trying not to disturb Trish’s line of thought. Trish took a deep breath, let it out and then said, “With the addition of the Yutaka III Starship to our fleet, we will soon offer an exciting new home delivery service to all entities living on planet Earth. This new delivery service (Direct Delivery Service or DDS for short) will allow citizens to procure their food and personal hygiene products from the comfort of their home or office, and at a fraction of the inflated prices ground based merchants are currently charging. There have been thousands of muggings and killings by gangs of thugs in the last few years, especially on the aging and female members of Earth’s populous. With this new service, no one will ever again have to venture out into the busy airways with their personal Aircar, or use public shuttle service to do their shopping.”

  “By simply logging into the database here on the Yutaka III and then checking the boxes in front of the items a customer wishes to purchase, they can have their order delivered in as little time as ninety seconds after placing the order. The customer must remember to place their three-meter square delivery mat (which they received when they first signed up) on the floor of their home before placing the order. The delivery transport uses the special sensors within the mat to locate the exact location the customer would like their order placed.”

  “Once the mat is in place and the order finalized, the mat will prompt the customer to remain clear of the delivery mat until notified that the order is complete. Then the mat w
ill beep three times. If the customer discovers an error in their purchases, they simply leave the incorrect item on the mat and fill out a return authorization form at our database. They may include any additional purchases or item identification information on that form if they so desire. Again, the customer will receive a reminder to remain clear of the delivery mat until the return order and reissued items have arrived. At that time, the mat will signal that the order is complete.”

  “Once the order process is complete, a recorded message placed in the memory module of the order mat will thank the customer for shopping with the Yutaka III DDS system. The message will state the following.”

  “The staff aboard the Yutaka III all hope this new delivery service has performed to your liking. If you should encounter a problem, please feel free to contact us immediately at our server. The staff will respond within ten minutes to all requests for service or assistance. The crew of the Yutaka III understands that many of you are totally angered with websites and software after the (IFTT) Intergalactic Federation of Time Travel made their mind-blowing attempt to update the Medical Healthcare System a few months ago. You will not have the same problems with this new delivery service, we promise you. We have tested this new service over the last ten years with our intergalactic customers and we have successfully worked out all foreseeable bugs. Thank you for shopping with the Yutaka III.”

  Once the business part of the meeting was over, Trish said, “After reading the computer logs, I have been made aware that a heated argument took place in the cargo bay between two of this crew and that their words were overheard by one of our visiting engineers. I am very concerned over this discovery. It does not bother me so much that my crew had an argument, those will happen from time to time, but it does piss me off when as visitor overhears those words. George and Joshua, would you both stand up and face me?” When the two men stood up, Joshua spoke to Trish and asked, “May I speak first, Skipper?” Trish nodded and waited for him to begin. Joshua turned towards George and said, “I was the one who spoke the loud words to my friend and I have apologized for getting angry with him over something as simple as a dropped wrench. When I discovered that the engineer had overheard my words, I walked over to the man and apologized to him as well. I explained to the engineer that I had no right to speak to a fellow crewmember as I did. I will now apologize to you, Skipper, and to Jill for speaking those words.”
